6 face shapes Frame numbers decoded Fit checklist Trending frames

Choosing new spectacles should feel exciting, not overwhelming. Yet with thousands of designs available across Malaysia, most people still ask: which frames suit my face, and what size should I buy?

This guide to glasses for face shape and frame size answers both. First, you'll identify your face shape. Then you'll decode the numbers printed inside every frame, and finally match the two together into styles that look balanced and feel comfortable all day. Whether you're shopping for prescription glasses, sunglasses, or your first progressive lenses, these are the same principles the SpectacleX team uses in-store and in our Virtual Try-On.

01 · Know Your Face

How to Identify Your Face Shape

First, pull your hair back and look straight into a mirror, or take a front-facing photo. Then compare four things: your forehead, cheekbones, jawline and face length. In most cases you'll land in one of six shapes. However, plenty of people are a blend of two, and in that case both sets of picks will work.

Oval

Balanced width & length · rounded chin

Best: almost anything, including wayfarer, rectangular and round.
Avoid: oversized frames that hide your features.

Round

Soft curves · width ≈ length

Best: rectangular, square, angular, browline.
Avoid: small round frames.

Square

Strong jaw · broad forehead

Best: round, oval, thin metal, rimless.
Avoid: boxy, sharp-cornered frames.

Heart

Wide forehead · narrow chin

Best: bottom-heavy, aviator, round, rimless.
Avoid: top-heavy decorated browlines.

Diamond

High cheekbones · narrow brow & jaw

Best: cat-eye, oval, browline, semi-rimless.
Avoid: very narrow frames.

Oblong

Longer than wide · straight cheeks

Best: tall/deep lenses, bold temples.
Avoid: short, narrow lenses.

Understanding Frame Size: What the Numbers Mean

Choosing glasses for face shape tells only half the story, because size decides whether they actually fit. So look inside any temple arm, where you'll find three numbers printed like this: 52□18 140.

Lens width · 52 mm Bridge · 18 mm Temple length · 140 mm
The three numbers printed on your temple arm, for example 52□18 140, decoded.
  • 52

Lens width (mm): the horizontal width of one lens. Most adult frames fall between 40 and 60 mm.

  • 18

Bridge width (mm): the gap that sits on your nose, typically 14 to 24 mm. If it's too wide the glasses slide, whereas too narrow and they pinch.

  • 140

Temple length (mm): the arm that runs to your ear, commonly 120 to 150 mm.

In addition, add lens height (important for progressive lenses, which need vertical room for the reading zone) and total frame width. Together, these give you the full picture of fit.

Find a frame width that matches your face width

Above all, total frame width is the single most useful measurement. Your eyes should sit in the centre of each lens, and the frame should end roughly where your face does. In other words, it shouldn't squeeze your temples, nor should it extend far past them.

Frame sizeTotal frame widthTypical lens width
SmallBelow 129 mm47 to 50 mm
Medium129 to 136 mm51 to 54 mm
LargeAbove 136 mm55 mm and up

Already own a pair that fits well? In that case, simply copy its numbers when you shop. Also, don't forget your pupillary distance (PD), the distance between your pupils in millimetres, since it ensures lenses are centred correctly over your eyes. For that reason, SpectacleX has a step-by-step PD measurement guide.

Five quick signs your frames fit properly

  • Your eyes sit in the middle of each lens, horizontally and vertically.
  • The frame does not touch your cheeks when you smile.
  • The temples run straight back without pressing into your head.
  • Glasses stay put when you look down and shake your head gently.
  • Eyebrows sit just above the frame line, not inside the lenses.

Beyond Shape and Size: Material, Lenses and Lifestyle

Once you've settled on glasses for face shape and the right measurements, material and lens choice turn a good-looking frame into a great everyday pair. Lightweight titanium frames are strong, corrosion-resistant and kind to sensitive skin, while acetate brings rich colour. See the American Academy of Ophthalmology's overview of frame materials. Then match your lenses to how you live.

Progressive / multifocal lenses

One pair for near, intermediate and distance. However, progressives need taller lens shapes, so frame depth matters here. For more detail, see our multifocal lenses page.

Anti-fatigue & blue light glasses

Popular with Malaysians who spend long hours on screens. Anti-fatigue lenses and blue light glasses ease eye strain through marathon workdays.

Myopia control lenses

Specially designed for children, in order to help slow short-sightedness. Therefore, ask our opticians about myopia control during your child's eye test.

Sunglasses & clip-ons

Above all, 100% UV protection is essential under the Malaysian sun. So browse sunglasses, or alternatively add a clip-on to your everyday pair.

Contact lenses

A flexible companion to spectacles for sports, events and special occasions.

An up-to-date prescription

In short, frames and lenses only ever perform as well as the prescription behind them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Choosing glasses for face shape

How do I know my face shape for glasses?
First, pull your hair back and face a mirror, or alternatively take a front-facing photo. Then compare your forehead, cheekbone and jaw widths against your face length. Equal width and length with soft curves suggests a round face, whereas a strong jaw suggests square, and a wide forehead with a narrow chin suggests heart-shaped. If you're between two shapes, recommendations for either will usually suit you.
Which glasses suit a round face?
Angular styles such as rectangular, square, geometric or browline frames add structure, and as a result they make a round face appear longer and slimmer. However, avoid small round frames, because they mirror your face's curves.
Can I wear any frame if I have an oval face?
Mostly, yes. Oval faces suit nearly every style, because their proportions are naturally balanced. Even so, keep the frame roughly as wide as your face and avoid extremes. Otherwise, very oversized or very narrow frames can throw off that balance.

Questions about frame size, fit and eye tests

What do the numbers on my glasses mean?
The three numbers inside the temple arm (for example 52□18 140) are the lens width, bridge width and temple length in millimetres. Therefore, if your current pair fits well, use its numbers as your baseline when choosing a new frame.
How should glasses fit properly?
Your eyes should sit at the centre of each lens. In addition, the frame shouldn't touch your cheeks when you smile, the temples shouldn't press into your head, and the glasses should stay in place when you move. Consequently, if anything slips or pinches, the size, not just the style, is wrong.
Do I need an eye test before buying new glasses?
Yes, especially if it has been more than a year or two since your last one. An eye examination confirms your prescription and your PD, and both of these affect how well any frame performs. Meanwhile, SpectacleX offers eye tests at all outlets, and booking online takes under a minute.
Can I try SpectacleX frames without visiting a store?
Yes. Either use the Virtual Try-On feature on spectaclex.com, or download the SpectacleX Virtual Try-On app from the App Store or Google Play to preview frames on your own face. After that, have your shortlist fitted in-store with X-Fit, or simply delivered to your door.
